To achieve the CannSell Certification, you will need to complete the training program and get a grade of at least 80% on the final exam. You will have a maximum of two attempts.

CannSell Standard Certification was the first training program approved for legally authorized cannabis retailers in Ontario. Ontario law requires that all employees of cannabis retail stores, store managers, and cannabis retail licence holders must complete a program such as CannSell and obtain certification before their first day of work.

Syllabus

Modules and Learning Objectives

Module 1 – Introduction to Cannabis

Understand the history and legalization of cannabis in Canada.

Identify the components of the cannabis plant.

Differentiate key cannabinoids (THC, CBD) and their effects.

Recognize the purpose of trichomes and terpenes.

Module 2 – Cannabis Categories and Products

Identify the main product categories (flower, oils, edibles, topicals, etc.).

Explain the difference between indica, sativa, and hybrid strains.

Understand product equivalency under possession limits.

Describe how processing and packaging affect product form and strength.

Module 3 – Methods of Consumption and Effects

Explain the various cannabis consumption methods (smoking, vaping, edibles, sublinguals, topicals).

Identify onset and duration characteristics of each method.

Understand absorption and physiological effects.

Recognize the role of accessories and how they impact use.

Module 4 – Effects and Risks of Cannabis

Distinguish between short-term and long-term effects.

Identify risks across populations (youth, pregnancy, mental health).

Understand the impact of dosing, tolerance, and individual characteristics.

Promote harm reduction and safe usage messaging.

Module 5 – AGCO and Federal Requirements

Understand the Cannabis Act and its national objectives.

Recognize legal possession, packaging, and edible product limits.

Understand AGCO’s role in retail compliance and enforcement.

Learn how to maintain store standards under federal and provincial law.

Module 6 – Medical and Recreational Cannabis, Cannabis Legislation

Compare medical and recreational cannabis frameworks.

Understand rules around personal possession, cultivation, and consumption.

Identify AGCO licensing types and regulatory expectations.

Describe store-level compliance, inspection, and operational responsibilities.

Module 7 – Budtender Best Practices and Cannabis-Impaired Driving
Apply responsible sales practices (age verification, refusal of sale).

Recognize signs of intoxication and prevent impaired sales.

Identify and prevent second-party purchases.

Understand the legal and ethical implications of cannabis-impaired driving.
